Sewing: Learn the basics of hand sewing and building basic hand sewing skills in order to be able to work independently on a multitude of sewing projects.

Level 1: We look at the benefits of owning and creating a personal sewing kit, why we learn sewing to fix clothes, toys, and other items. We present a break down of the basics using a cardboard sewing project using a large needle and bailing twine: threading the needle, the difference between running stitch and whip stitch. In completing 2 fun and basic sewing projects, we solidify the students understanding of these following sewing concepts: reading a pattern, threading a needle, joining pieces of fabric, practicing the running stitch, the whip stitch, and learn how to make a buttonhole.

The first project, a Treasure Bag, entails measuring and pinning fabric, hemming the edge, learning the running stitch, making an invisible seam, and using the whipstitch to make a buttonhole. The Dream Pillow project builds on these skills to teach students to sew a patchwork pillow stuffed with wool and herbs. Students will be able to take these home and are encouraged to share this confidence in their sewing skills to their friends and family.
